2.Injury Reserve
By the Time I Get to Phoenix (2021)
'Outside'
[Progressive Electronic, Experimental Hip Hop, Abstract Hip Hop, Sound Collage, Psychedelia, Drumless]
the first song on the one of the most harrowing albums in any genre ever. injury reserve's "surrealist deconstruction" of hip hop. the song uses 'Panico a las 5 A.M.' by Rada (Angel Gilberto Rada Requiz), an avant garde prog electronic song. they take it and put it next to a clip from a rap battle, from ritchie having 'rap battle' like flow over the instrumental with a vocal performance feeling anxious yet confident. like preparing or being the leader of an apocalypse about to happen. then he delivers some spoken word where he gives off cryptic warnings. then they let the sample drop (like the start of a rollercoaster from hell) with extra drums from black midi drummer morgan simpson, glitched out effects, extra psychedelic sounds and ominous heavy breathing. the opener is anti welcoming in a way.
favorite lyric:
Got my skeletons, you've got yours
But let's be honest here
This-this don't end with agree to disagree, it ain't possible

The Velvet Rope (1997)
'Velvet Rope'
[New Jack Swing, Art Pop, Dance Pop]
probably the most ambitious new jack swing song i've ever heard. feels so grand and opens the album perfectly with its message of openness and sensuality. song is haunting, free and euphoric all at once. very atmospheric song too. oh and the violin solo from vanessa mae (that happens around 3:30) is so surreal like how tf do u make it sound like that? probably the most avant garde moment on any janet song.
favorite lyric:
This special need that's within us
Brings out the best, yet worst in us
