Best Banana Nutella Smoothie Recipe (1)

When most kids come home from school, they are ravenously hungry. After spending 6-7 hours in school, they typically have an after-school activity to go to, whichleaves no to little time for them to grab something to eat.

That’s when smoothies save the day. Smoothies are great on the go, plus there are endless flavor combos that you can create to keep it interesting.

One of my favorite ingredients to make smoothies with isbananas. If you are like me, you probably have a banana or two lying on the kitchen counter waiting to be rescued. You could always whip up banana breadfrom overripe bananas, but having recently tasted a banana Nutella crepeat a cafe in NYC, those flavors were lingering on my mind.

So on a whim, I combined banana and a few tablespoons of Nutella along with milk and added a tad bit of cocoa powder to the mix, and came up with this delicious, chocolatey banana Nutella smoothie.

The kids were overjoyed! Now, who doesn’t love Nutella? Instead of talking about the goodness of bananas in their smoothies, I told them it was a Nutella smoothie, and they chugged it down in seconds.

How to make a Banana Nutella smoothie

Note– I add frozen bananas because when blended, they turn into this creamy milkshake texture, and you don’t need to add ice. If you don’t have frozen bananas handy, bananas kept at room temperature will do fine.

What makes this smoothieextra delicious? The hot cocoamix.A fewof our favorites areGhiradelli double chocolate mixand the caramel sea salt cocoa (found in Kroger stores.)

You can always turn this recipe into abanana Nutella milkshakeby adding a dollop of vanilla ice cream but let me warn you – once the kids get the taste of ice cream in their smoothie, going back to the no-ice-cream version can be hard 🙂

Ingredient notes/swaps

  • Bananas, ripe yet firm, sliced into bite-sized chunks and frozen
  • Whole milk – For a vegan version, use oat or almond milk.
  • Nutella or homemade Nutella – I add a tablespoon to every cup of milk, but for a stronger Nutella flavor, you can add more.
  • Hot cocoa mix (such as Ghiradelli’s double chocolate or Kroger’s Private Selection Sea Salt Caramel) for that chocolatey taste. You can substitute it with a teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder.
  • Ice cubes, optional – if not using frozen bananas, add ice cubes for a chilled smoothie.

FAQs

Is banana and Nutella good for you? ›

A handful of raw oats add thickness to your smoothie while kicking the fiber and protein up a notch.

Why do bananas make smoothies better? ›

Do smoothies need milk or water? ›

This can be milk, or a dairy-free alternative such as soya or almond milk, natural or flavoured yogurt, fruit juice, or for a tropical flavoured smoothie, low-fat coconut milk or coconut water. It's important to add the liquid to your blender before adding the fruit, as this will prevent the blade from getting damaged.

What ingredient goes first in a smoothie? ›

Adding the liquid first is important for a couple of reasons. The liquid acts as a solvent, dissolving any powders (hello protein powder) you might want to add. And when you turn the blender on, the liquid will whiz through the blades quickly and easily, drawing down other ingredients to be chopped up.

Do you put ice in a smoothie? ›

Typically you would add ice to a smoothie, but if your fruit is pre-frozen, it is unnecessary to use ice. Adding fruit juice is a good option, but remember to be aware of the sugar content of any fruit juice you are adding to your smoothie.

What ingredient thickens a smoothie? ›

Frozen ingredients are the key to creating a thick smoothie. Using fibrous, thick-fleshed fruit and vegetables can also help the texture. Adding chia seeds, avocado, yogurt, and protein powder are other thickening options.

What makes a smoothie creamy? ›

Certain fruits, such as bananas, mangoes, and avocados, naturally contain high amounts of pulp, which helps to thicken smoothies. These fruits lend a creamy, decadent texture that makes your smoothies truly irresistible. For an extra boost of thickness, consider adding thickeners to your smoothies.

Combining bananas with citrus fruits like lime, oranges or grapefruits, may lead to indigestion or discomfort for some individuals.

Can I eat Nutella and still be healthy? ›

If you want to eat Nutella, go ahead. It's probably not the worst food out there, but it's definitely not going to bring you health benefits. If you choose to indulge, just remember that you're eating it for the flavor and not the nutritional content.

Is it OK to eat Nutella while on a diet? ›
